Christopher Alexander was a British-American architect, author, and teacher who is best known for his book The Timeless Way of Building, published in 1977. Christopher Alexander, widely influential British-American architect and design theorist, Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 80. After his graduation from the University of Cambridge with a degree in mathematics in 1952, Alexander worked briefly for the distinguished British architect Sir Denys Lasdun. In 1954 Alexander moved to the United States, where he became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. It was during this time that he published his first book, A Pattern Language.

British American architect and design theorist Christopher Alexander has died. The old Alexander, who won a Pritzker Prize in 1979, passed away on 1st July at his home in Berkeley, California. He succumbed to Parkinson’s disease after he was diagnosed with the neurological disorder in early 2012.

Within the architecture and design communities, Christopher Alexander is widely recognized as a key figure and one of the most influential architects and design theorists of the 20th century. He initially rose to prominence as a counterpoint to the rigid formalism he felt was becoming increasingly pervasive in modern architecture. Alexander was born in Berkeley, California in February 1922. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1943, then went on to earn his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley in 1944 and 1947, respectively.
